St Richard’s Catholic College is celebrating the achievements of a group of 24 pupils who picked up their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards at a presentation ceremony.

There were also three pupils - Crystal Purnell, Helena Ball and Hermione Porter - who received Silver awards at the Hastings and Rother DofE awards evening.

St Richard’s was registered as a DofE centre back in September 2012 and had an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from pupils wanting to participate in the programme.

Since then, the pupils enrolled on the available places at the college and another five additional pupils, attached to other DofE centres, have shown great commitment and determination to successfully complete their awards.

Each pupil has been developing and challenging themselves through a variety of skill-based, physical and voluntary activities to which they have dedicated themselves for a period of time between 3 and 6 months.

In addition, they have completed several months of expedition training including two demanding expeditions on the South Downs last July.

These training activities have been organized and run in the evenings and at weekends by a team of teachers (Dan Harwood, Colin Venner, Floss Nicholls, Mike Padgham and Joolz Durkin from St Richard’s.

Mr Harwood, teacher and co-ordinator of the DofE programme at St Richard’s, said: ‘It has been a great privilege for us to work with the pupils and watch them work together, learning new skills and operating effectively in teams. We are immensely proud of their achievements and congratulate them on receiving their awards.”
