Businesses in the town centre are being urged to dust down their tinsel and test their Christmas lights in readiness for the Best Christmas Window Display competition.

The competition is being held to celebrate the arrival of Bexhill’s new Christmas lights and traders can now register to take part in the event.

Entry is free and open to any shop or business with an external window display area.

Andrew Crotty, a member of the Shining Lights group which is organising the competition, said: “The theme of each display should be linked in some way to the words ‘Shining Lights’, but can be very varied in interpretation.

“As 2015 marks 70 years since the end of the World War II blackout in 1945, we will give extra credit to all windows which in some way commemorate the end of the war.

“Displays which include a lit tree or other festive lights will also be asked to take part in a ‘blackout’ five minutes before the new lights are switched on, and to relight their window when the new lights are illuminated for maximum effect.

“Participating window displays should be completed at any time up to the end of November and will be judged on Thursday, December 3.”

The names of those businesses taking part will be widely publicised and members of the independent judging panel will be announced shortly.

All participating businesses will receive a free window sticker to say they are taking part.

Any business situated between, and including, Sackville Road and Sea Road, and the seafront and Town Hall Square is eligible to take part in the competition.

Rosettes will be given out to the first, second and third best windows, plus highly commended awards if the standard is high enough.

The overall winner will also receive a bottle of champagne, and a framed poem about their business written by popular local poet Claire Baldry.

Mr Crotty added: “The winners will be announced on December 4 and every effort will made to publicise the competition and to encourage visitors to explore the town centre and look at the window displays.”

The competition is now open for entries.

Businesses can register their entries and collect free stickers from Polecat Properties in Wilton Road, or by emailing baldryclaire@btinternet.com
