BARELY four months after announcing that it was creating 200 new jobs for 2013, leading local employer Hastings Direct has doubled that to 400 new jobs.

On Friday, the insurance giant’s chief executive officer, Gary Hoffman, met Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd to formally announce that it was looking to recruit a further 200 staff from across the region, including from Mr Lloyd’s constituency.

In September last year Hastings Direct, whose head office is at Conquest House in Collington Avenue, Bexhill, said that in order to meet growing demand it needed to expand its present 1,400 strong workforce.

At that stage, 200 jobs were in prospect, but now the company says it needs twice that - from entry level recruits to senior managers.

Mr Hoffman said: “At Hastings Direct we are single-minded in our ambition to build a UK success story. In recent years the business has grown rapidly from 300,000 customers in February 2009 to over the one million we serve today.

“We are already one of the largest employers in East Sussex, but we have ambitions to serve three million customers by 2020 and these extra staff will help us realise that goal.”

Congratulating the company on its success, Mr Lloyd said: “This announcement is a tremendous sign of confidence in UK plc.

“With over a million new jobs created in the private sector since May 2010 (when the Coalition Conservative-Lib Dem government came to power) it is clear that despite the difficult economic environment, there are real growth opportunities out there for quality companies like Hastings Direct.”

The new jobs are full-time equivalents and for entry-level roles the company would be happy to consider job share or part-time mums, dads or students wishing to earn extra income across the shifts, which include evenings and weekends. All applicants must be over 18.

As outlined in September, starting packages are expected to begin at £17,000 , including an average monthly bonus payment, plus a range of benefits including employee discounts with major retailers worth up to £1,000 a year.

With more than 800 people unemployed in Bexhill, the town’s Chamber of Commerce and Tourism and the Bexhill and Battle MP, Greg Barker, have both already welcomed the prospect of more jobs coming to the area.
