Illegal dumping of waste in the streets has cost more than £180,000 in the last year.

At a recent meeting of the Joint Waste Committee, made up of Hastings and Eastbourne Borough Councils, the county council, Rother and Wealden District Councils, it was revealed there were more than 5,000 incidents of fly-tipping over the last 12 months.

Hastings saw the highest number of fly-tips, totalling 2,418 over the same period, costing £88,063.

Dr Anthony Leonard, lead director for the Joint Waste Committee, said there had been six fly-tipping prosecutions instigated by Hastings Borough Council since 2013.

Neighbouring Rother saw only 377 incidents at a total cost of £8,217.

In Eastbourne there were 1,692 cases at a cost of £56,766. Wealden saw 537 incidents, costing a total of £30,705.

In a report presented to members at the meeting held on April 8, Dr Leonard said: “Fly-tipping, fly-posting, graffiti and other environmental nuisances are a prime concern for the partnership. With over 5,000 annual incidents of fly-tipping in the last year this has cost £184,000 in total.”

The report was written after members requested information about fly-tipping across East Sussex.
