Jimmy Smith is the new Crawley Town captain, with head coach Dermot Drummy highlighting his positive maturity and mentality making him right for the role.

The former Leyton Orient, QPR and Chelsea midfielder has been handed the armband for the upcoming League Two campaign.

The 29-year-old joined the Reds in May 2014 and signed a new one-year deal in May.

He has made 76 appearances for the club, scoring two league goals having recovered from a broken ankle last season and takes over the job from Sonny Bradley, who left the club in the summer.

Drummy said: “Jimmy Smith is our captain. What were his qualities? Maturity and coming back to pre-season training being 100 per cent mentally fit, I have noticed that in him.

“He is at the right stage of his career to lead this team. He cares about Crawley. He was buzzing when he saw the new dressing rooms.

“I like what I see in Jimmy.”

Drummy also confirmed after the Brighton & Hove Albion match, he would be signing two out of the current trialists - Andre Blackman, Billy Clifford and Charlie Gregory - which will be announced next week.

He is also looking to make one more permanent signing in the coming weeks.
