Future bright for popular street market

Looking ahead to the upcoming Anglo-French market next month is new woman-in-charge Lynn Brailsford who takes over its organisation from Bexhill Chamber of Commerce’s Sue Spice.

Sue announced back in September that she would be passing on the baton having run the market for more than ten years. The future of the event then seemed in doubt but Bexhill 100 Motoring Club stepped in having long been associated with it.

Chairman Roger Gillett then asked secretary Lynn Brailsford to be new organiser and she agreed.

Lynn has been taking her lead from Sue and is confident the market will be a success as she has strong support and advice from experienced Bexhill 100 members who have in the past helped put up road signs, acted as marshals, and advised visitors to the market.

“It seemed a natural thing for us to take over,” she told the Observer. “And I thought it was within my capabilities. So we have taken it on and are up and running.”

The familiar French traders will be revisiting Bexhill for the weekend, bringing the sights and smells of their gourmet country, and there will also be a wide range of local traders - with Indian and Thai treats available, as well as homemade cakes, gifts, jewellery, craft and farm produce.

“Hopefully it will make a lovely weekend for Bexhill. It is generally a very good atmosphere. I have the support of a very strong team - all we need now is nice weather.”

Profits will go to charity. Bexhill 100 members will decide which after they have held their August Bank Holiday Monday show at the Polegrove and discover how much that has made.

This year sees the 10th anniversary of the summer show which over the years has raised £30,000.

This Sunday sees another popular annual event - the Easter Bonnet Parade, which will have members displaying their beautifully decorated and immaculately presented vehicles along the seafront from 9.30am onwards, with prizes for best Easter Bonnet. The parade is centred along the seafront on De La Warr Parade from The Sackville onwards.
