Interim chiefs leave school

Bexhill High Interim Principal Andy Mortimer and Head of School Darren Gelder bowed out this week after a year at the troubled school.

Heidi Brown will take over as Principal in September. Here Andy reflects on the impact the pair have made at the Academy.

He said: “I have worked in many schools in the same category but Bexhill has never felt to me like a “special measures” school.

The students are truly delightful and hungry to learn, the staff team is highly professional and dedicated and the parents and carers are as supportive as any Principal couldpossibly wish for.

“Slowly but surely, working steadily together as a united team, we have addressed the concerns rightly identified by Ofsted.

“In twelve months we have achieved four positive reports

from HMI and two from the Department for Education. “I am intensely proud to have played a part in that achievement.

“There is now a real sense that the school is moving forward.

“I really wanted to make Bexhill High the school of choice for Bexhill families and in a relatively short time

“I am pleased to see perceptions of the school changing significantly for the better. “There is still plenty to do but as I hand the baton to Heidi Brown and her team I am confident that Bexhill High will soon be seen as the good school the town so badly needs and deserves.

“I thank from my heart all those who have helped to begin this transformation. Feeling valued and appreciated by you has enabled me to transmit those same feelings of positivity and confidence to all of you, students, colleagues, governors and parents.

“Without you, none of this could have happened.”
