Bernard Simon is celebrating having achieved his BA Hons degree at the age of 75.

He achieved his remarkable success in Theatre Studies after working at it for six years.

Bernard, of Newlands Avenue, commented: “As a young man I failed to qualify for university and had to work very hard to obtain a professional qualification after leaving school aged 16. I had always been interested in the theatre and performing, from nativity plays in primary school to Gilbert and Sullivan in secondary school, scout shows in my youth and amateur societies throughout my life.

When I reached retirement I decided I would do something I had missed out on - a university degree.

I had over 40 years experience in local operatics, spending many years with the Hastleons and the BLODS; this became an obvious target to retain my interest and motivation.

I discovered through NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) that there was a possible Distance Learning Degree with Rose Bruford College, Sidcup under

Manchester University, studying everything from Shakespeare to musicals to directing and so on, perfect for me.

Six years later I have qualified as a BA (Hons) graduate in Theatre Studies and have helped to found a youth group - In The Wings Youth Theatre Company to pass on some of my knowledge and experience to a younger generation.”

Why did I do it? Self-satisfaction I suppose, a manifestation of my love of theatre. But what next? I cannot stagnate and can only expatiate, after all it’s never too late!”
