Bexhill Museum thanks volunteers for giving up their time

ON BEHALF of my fellow directors I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 80 plus volunteers who last Saturday attended Bexhill Museum’s Volunteers’ Day; a special event to thank every one of our volunteers for their continuing contributions, to unveil new exhibitions and to introduce our plans for 2012.

Seeing so many enthusiastic, familiar faces and indeed many new ones, made me realise that so long as we have such support, Bexhill Museum has a guaranteed future and will continue to punch above its weight.

Many volunteers were involved in arranging the day’s events, but I must mention in particular Tony Parker, Rachel Whitham, Christine O’Grady and Helen Anson. I also must not forget our curator Julian Porter and administrator Don Phillips who voluntarily gave up part of their weekend to assist with the smooth running of the day.

I have mentioned many times that your museum cannot be operated without volunteers. Also it cannot be maintained and have a future without the support of Bexhill’s residents. In this regard local visitors to the museum amount to only one third of what we should expect, comparing average figures from Britain’s independent museums. We really do need your support. Unlike the majority of museums who have the advantage of significant statutory funding we have to rely heavily on admission fees for our primary income source.

We are now open seven days a week through to mid-December and I can assure readers that you will be astounded by the current exhibitions, just to mention two - A Celebration of Bexhill’s Sporting Heritage including aspects of the life of RDC’s chief executive I bet you did not know about. And a breathtaking display from Papua New Guinea plus many more exhibits on display for the first time. Coming shortly will be World Stories, a project for which we have been licenced to display the Cultural Olympiad logo. You will also find a fine gift shop and cafe facilities. So why not give us a few hours of your time. You never know, you may like it so much that you decide to become a member or better still a member and a volunteer.
