Expensive beach huts

I HAVE been notified that the cost for my beach hut for the East Parade this year is now £250. This is almost a 10 per cent increase from previously. Every year the rental goes up and the service does not.

I contacted the council about this, and was advised that there is a new set of people running this part of the amenities: “The decision is made and nothing can be done about it.” We had a great relationship with the previous administration and always talked and compromised on everything.

The increase as advised is for the upkeep of the toilets and promenade, but us owners already pay for this upkeep from our local rates. All the hut owners pay rates to the council.

The council spends vast amounts on the West Parade and little or nothing on the East Parade, but they still expect us to pay £250 just to rent a small piece of the beach.

I stood down as the chair/spokesperson for the hut owners as of yesterday (Thursday January 19) and from now on every time there is a problem with vandalism or damage due to weather, then the council will have to contact the hut owners and with them arrange for the hut to be secured, moved back onto its base or repairs to be carried out. As I live on the front, I have for the past six years handled these matters and assisted the hut owners every way I could by saving the council a lot of time and money.

The hut owners should write to the council and lobby our councillor about the increases.
