Is housing needed?
TO QUOTE from Cllr Jenkins’ letter to the Bexhill Observer (December 30) “It is a fact we need more affordable housing”, how many people need this housing and does “affordable” mean to rent? The ‘mortgages for all’ policy of the DSA was a financial disaster.
Cllr Jenkins said: “It is a fact we need to create more jobs in the area”, has the land in Hastings and Rother developed for industrial use been fully taken up? There are many towns in the UK with good communications and high unemployment rates of skilled and unskilled workers that companies setting up, or re-locating, are spoilt for choice. Building new sites for industry on spec doesn’t seem sensible to me.
It’s a cry of my generation “that fings ain’t what they used to be” and this certainly applies to Bexhill. But building social housing and industrial parks on spec will not re-generate Bexhill but make matters worse.
If our councillors want to make a difference let them tackle the parking problem and the toilets in Devonshire Square which are only a little better than a hole in the ground.
