Nightly disturbances
I AM writing in response to a recent letter by a Bexhill Observer reader. I am a neighbour of the London Road hostel run by Sanctuary Housing for young homeless people. I have been subjected to almost nightly disturbances including shouting, swearing, smashing of bottles, foul language, fighting and use of the road works as missiles. There can sometimes be as many as 15 young people clustering in and around the hostel. This behaviour often goes on until the wee small hours, sometimes as late as 5am. I would like to ask who is responsible for these young people?
We have all been teenagers in the past and I am sure many of us have been accused of the odd bit of loud behaviour late at night on our way home. But there is a line of respect and common decency that most of us know not to cross. It would appear these young people have no such respect. But then who is there to guide them? Who is prepared to take responsibility for these youngsters?
I know of neighbours living alone, some of whom are elderly, and some are scared at night now... so scared that they sleep with the telephone next to the bed with the local police telephone number programmed in for speed dialling.
This has always been a close community, one where we all look out for each other, where we live in relative harmony. I ask the recent writer is this not our right to live free from fear and worry in our own homes? I am prepared to offer respect to all those that deserve it but it can be extremely difficult to show any empathy when you are sleep deprived.
Name and address withheld due to the fear of reprisal.... sad but true.
