Thumbs up for market
WE welcome the planned return of Bexhill Farmers’ Market. The open air market could bring an additional dimension to the shopping offer currently available in the town; extending the range of locally produced goods and complementing the independent shops that are so distinctive of Bexhill town centre.
Bexhill town centre already has greengrocers, a butcher, fishmonger, craft bakers selling fresh local food. There is also an enviable range of craft-based enterprises setting the town apart from others. How many other towns today can claim to have tailors, an upholsterer, mosaic artists, a book-binder, craft jewellers, and many more skilled artisans all with town centre shops? A regular market day with local producers adding to the range of local wares already on offer could be an additional incentive for visitors and shoppers to come into the town on Fridays and make a ‘day of it’.
We hope a vibrant market will prove to be an attraction in the town centre; drawing in residents from the surrounding areas. It might also brighten up and bring some activity to the desolate and generally unused area outside the Post Office in Devonshire Square.
