Little Common Horticultural Society

At our meeting on October 9 our speaker was Ian Everest. He is well-known for lecturing about farming and military history covering the past 200 years. His talk was entitled “Shepherds of the South Downs-their lives and times “ and illustrated with many old slides of those well-known characters who had shepherded on the downs .

It was a lonely life but an important one to the sheep farmer as, in addition to their work, he would expect them to give him advice on such matters as buying and selling etc. Looking after sheep is a difficult job as they are vulnerable to a range of attacks from pests and they would be extremely busy during such important times as the lambing season and the shearing time.

We shall be holding our AGM on November 13. Members are reminded to bring their membership cards.

We are looking for members to serve on the committee. The society brings a lot of pleasure to our members but it could not exist without a committee . It is not an arduous task and can bring satisfaction that you are contributing to society. Mr Cameron talks about the Big Society. We are a small part of that.
