Little Common Royal British Legion Women's Section
DESPITE the cold, frosty, weather there was a good turn-out of members for the Wednesday evening meeting.
Chairman Mrs Hilary Turner opened the meeting and then it was down to the usual business of report, secretary, treasurer, outing organiser etc.
Members were reminded (in good time) of the County Conference on November 20 and, nearer, the annual general meeting on April 22 and 23.
A bingo afternoon has been arranged on March 25 at 2.30pm at the Legion. Please come - all welcome. Arts and crafts arranged.
All who went to the Ice Show in Brighton really enjoyed it.
The arrangements for the holiday on May 18 at Shanklin, Isle of Wight is almost fully booked.
The raffle was drawn and prizes won.
The last half of the evening finished with Mrs Turner presenting a special award to a lady who has been one of the leading lights in the Women's Section of the Legion for more than 40 years.
She has been chairman, treasurer and a valuable committee member here at Little Common along with being a very excellent standard bearer.
She has helped at many functions, Christmas and Spring Fairs and in an invaluable member of the county committee.
Therefore with great pleasure from all she was presented with a certificate in recognition of all the hours spent supporting the Royal British Legion, Women's Section Little Common to vice president Joan Berry.
Mrs Berry was then asked to present an award to another member who has been secretary for 18 years, in which time she helped support a number of chairmen, which has been greatly appreciated, steering a course through the monthly meeting, putting things to rights so all ran smoothly.
She has also helped the branch to win various awards at County level by form-filling and adding her reports.
She won the Longley Ellis Bowl in 2008 for best secretary's report. In the past she wrote reports of our meetings to the local paper, wrote poems for Remembrance which have been read at many local funerals.
Her other skills are flower-arranging and her displays with poppies during November, which are all around the branch, are magnificent and much admired as are her table decorations which adorn our tables at various functions. She puts together fruit baskets for our raffles as well as helping on the stall.
She is an extremely talented lady and is now our president. For Mrs Daphne Tebbs this award has been truly deserved. So on behalf of our branch she was presented with a Lifetime Membership of the RBL Women's Section.
A very emotional Mrs Tebbs said her husband would have been so proud as he supported her always and everything was worked around her commitment to the Legion.
The entertainment was to be Pam's People but a member of the group was ill. We hope she gets well soon.
We were fortunate to get Alan Roffey who took over at the last minute to talk to us about the birds in his garden with colourful slides and much amusing banter. He works at Merriments garden centre at Hurst Green (thought he was in Heaven, so many ladies!)
Lots of information, very interesting, good questions and answers too at the end. There was much applause. Mrs Killick gave the vote of thanks.
We meet on the second Wednesday evening of the month from 7pm to 9pm at Little Common Legion. Come and join us for an evening and maybe you'll join.
