Bexhill High student Maria Goptareva, says she is delighted at being elected to serve on the East Sussex County Council’s new Youth cabinet.
Maria - also the vice-chair of Bexhill Youth Council - only moved to this country four years ago, having previously lived in Russia, and has made a huge impact at the academy.
The month-long election across East Sussex saw 4,114 votes made online and 7,233 paper ballots cast at polling stations at schools, colleges and youth groups.
Maria, a Year 11 student, said, ‘I am very passionate on making improvements to the community and I want young people to be proud and satisfied of where they live. I am determined to fight for the voice of young people in Bexhill to be heard across Sussex.’
Cllr Sylvia Tidy, East Sussex County Council lead member for children and families, said: “I am absolutely delighted to see so many young people taking the trouble to make their votes count. It shows great promise for the democracy in this country that young people are being encouraged to vote and the level of interest shown in the election once again demonstrates that young people are interested in making a difference on the issues which affect their lives.
