Next weekend Bexhill residents will be able to receive a free blood pressure check and general health advice in the town centre.

Bexhill Rotary Club, along with Rotarians nationwide, will be once again holding their Health Awareness Day between 9am and lunchtime on Saturday April 5 in Devonshire Square outside the main Post Office.

For more than 10 years Rotary International in Great Britain (RIBI) has been supporting stroke prevention across the UK and it’s estimated that over 200,000 people have had their blood pressure checked at Health Awareness/Know Your Blood Pressure events hosted by Rotary during that time.

According to the Stroke Association (www.stroke.org.uk) there are 152,000 strokes in the UK every year, which works out at one every five minutes.

High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor contributing to stroke, but it has no symptoms and can affect people of any age.

An estimated 16 million people in the UK have high blood pressure yet many of them don’t know it.

If left untreated, it can increase the risk of having a stroke.

At Bexhill Rotary’s Health Awareness Day experts will not only be on hand to check people’s blood pressure but also to provide free advice on glaucoma, weight control, hearing, mental agility and a number of other medical issues.

The event is not intended to replace advice available form GPs but to appreciate that a lot of people are put off visiting their GP for what they may think to be trivial problems.

As Naz Manji, chairman of the organising committee, said, “This Health Awareness Day will be a good chance for people to put their minds at rest by coming into our marquee for a quick test.”

Also in Devonshire Square to support the Rotary event will be Nick McCorry, accompanied by PR man Geoff Dixon, with the boat he plans to row in his Atlantic Rowing Challenge for charity which takes place later this year.

Adventurer Nick, along with three others, rowed the Indian Ocean for charity back in 2009.
