Changes to the way we vote will be coming your way

Bexhill residents are asked to look out for a letter telling them if they’ve been transferred to a new voter registration system.

The Government’s new Individual Electoral Registration scheme has replaced the old system where the ‘head of the household’ registered everyone living in their property.

From August 11, people currently on the register will begin to receive letters from Rother District Council (RDC) either confirming they have been transferred to the new system or asking for more information.

The system, the biggest change in how people register to vote in a century, allows people to register to vote or change their details online for the first time. It also features greater security checks, with people registering asked to provide their date of birth and National Insurance number, to prevent fraud.

RDC say the vast majority of people already on the electoral register won’t have to do anything unless their details change or they move. People are asked to read the letter carefully to check whether they need to take any action.

Register online to vote at: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. More details at: www.gov.uk/yourvotematters.
