Campaigners fighting for the future of Bexhill’s last remaining cinema have offered £390,000 to the owners of the building in Western Road.
The Ormiston Trust - a charity which supports children and young people across the UK - has already stressed its need to make the best financial return for its beneficiaries but appears open to the offer even though there is also another of £475,000 from a third party.
The charity claims it is “very sympathetic” to the aims of the Bexhill Community Playhouse and would like to help the group achieve its goal “of returning the Bexhill cinema into a vibrant community hub.”
Steve Macleod has told them the Trust would “in principle be willing” to make a grant of £85,000 to make up the difference, subject to certain conditions.
These are, he said: that “the £85,000 would be offset against ‘community programmes’ agreed between the parties.
“These programmes would be aligned with the mission of our trust; which is to improve the lives of young people.
“The Ormiston Trust would be particularly interested in ensuring access to the facility for some of the most disadvantaged children in your local community.
“We would also be very happy to assist with any plans to encourage local young people to engage with the facility.
·”In the event that your endeavour fails; and the site is sold, or leased, to a third party, for any commercial purpose, the Ormiston Trust would expect to recover its investment following any such transaction.”
“Representatives of theTrust met with members of the Bexhill Community Playhouse to look over the property and hear their plans.
Mr Macleod said: “We expressed our concerns, at the meeting, about the scale of the task which you have taken on. As we are proposing to make a substantial grant to your organisation we hope that you appreciate that we have to establish the viability of your endeavour as well as satisfying our board that you have sufficient funding to ensure a reasonable chance of achieving your ultimate goal.”
