BEXHILL’S Comet store will close on Monday with the loss of 16 jobs.

Joint administrators at Deloitte say that 125 UK stores face immediate closure. Stock from those branches will be sold in 70 stores still open.

Yesterday Deloitte confirmed the store at Ravenside, which employs 16 full and part-time workers, will shut after the weekend.

And a spokesman told the Observer that unless there were “significant changes”, all Comet stores would be closed before Christmas.

Last week 20 jobs were lost when stores in Crawley and Lewes Road, Brighton, were closed.

A further 100 staff at stores in Eastbourne, Hove, Bognor and Worthing are facing redundancy by December 15.

Deloitte, still seeking a buyer for the former electrical giant, said that in the absence of a firm offer for the entire business they would begin closing 125 stores over the next few weeks, leaving some 70 stores still trading until all of the remaining stock is sold.

The company’s business support functions at Rickmansworth, Hull and Clevedon will be further reduced at the same time, in line with the ongoing retail business.

Joint administrator Chris Farrington said: “We remain in discussions with a small number of interested parties and hope that a positive outcome can still be achieved.

“ Should any acceptable offers be received for stores we will delay the closure process. “Unfortunately, in the absence of a firm offer for the whole of the business, it has become necessary to begin making plans in case a sale is not concluded. If a sale is not possible we would envisage stores to begin closing in December.”

Deloitte has also held talks with employees at the Harlow distribution centre over proposals to close the site today. A similar centre at Skelmersdale is continuing to support the store network.
