Family worries over lost holiday

The collapse of a local travel agent looks set to leave a family out of pocket and a grandfather without a much-needed holiday.

M E Travel went into liquidation earlier this month – with staff being told by email that the branch had closed.

Employees spoke of their concern for customers but hoped that, as ME Travel was a ABTA member, holidays would not be affected.

ABTA confirmed it was looking into the firm and that due to its membership most holidaymakers would not lose out.

However, not everyone is likely to be so lucky. Julie Parsons contacted The Observer after reading the report of the sudden closure. She explained how she had purchased some travel vouchers for her dad, John Cooper, through the firm. Her concern is that having paid £300 in cash for the vouchers, her case may not be one which can be dealt with by ABTA.

She said: “My dad was 80 on January 18 and on January 16 we went in and paid £300 cash for vouchers for him to have a short break away later in the year.

“He has not been at all well recently and all his children and grandchildren clubbed together for this nice surprise at his party.

“We got the voucher so he could use it when he was well enough.

“We we’re gobsmacked to read about M E Travel in the paper.

“Our mother telephoned the number supplied straight away and they said they will get back to her as they are dealing with all the people that have holidays booked.

“As we paid cash we will not have any back up as if we had paid by credit card.

“So thanks to M E Travel we have not only lost £300 but our dad is not having a break away which he truly deserves.”
