Feeding minds - taking books to local foodbank

Bexhill Foodbank will add books to its essential stores when members of Bexhill and Battle Labour Party Women’s Section visit on Tuesday.

For the second year running, secretary Philipa Coughlan was chosen as a participant to receive free books as part of World Book Night, this time with the theme of helping community organisations.

As Bexhill Foodbank is the group’s chosen charity, members will take 90 copies from authors including Andy McNab and John Boyne. World Book events offer books to those may not usually have access to them.

Philipa said: “Simon Earl and the volunteers at the Foodbank offer a lifeline to many people in the area. Despite claims by certain people that they do not ‘deserve’ help, it can be deeply distressing to have to seek out a Foodbank when you may be struggling with debt and other financial challenges. We consider those that are entitled to help from Bexhill’s Foodbank deserve all the assistance they receive, and over a friendly talk with volunteers thought it would be nice to offer the chance to take away a free book as well. After all, reading a book can help you feel just like everyone else despite the problems you may be facing.”
