Next Friday (March 28) Bexhill Farmers’ Market celebrates its first birthday with a gala reopening.

The popular monthly market in Devonshire Square began on Good Friday March 29 2013 and its first customers were greeted with a flurry of snow.

Since then the market has opened every Friday (except Christmas week) including throughout the wettest January on record, attracting hundreds of residents and out-of-town visitors to visit the town centre each week.

Janet Bussche, the secretary of Bexhill Farmers’ Market Association, said: “We mean to make our birthday reopening a special day,

“The final programme is still being put in place but there is sure to be a festive atmosphere with balloons and bunting and music

from our resident accordionist Noel and some special guests.

“There will be a special birthday cake made by our Avril - with a small slice for everyone! - and the winning ticket of our Green Welly raffle will be drawn at 12.30.”

For those unfamiliar with the Green Welly scheme, customers receive a ticket for each purchase they make and place it in the eponymous ceramic boot, the owner of the winning ticket when drawn receiving a huge ‘hamper’ of groceries and other delights from the market traders.

Nick Hollington, the BFMA chairman, said: “All the familiar stallholders will be back next Friday, including most of those who started a year ago, have been incredibly loyal as have so many of our regular customers, who have become like friends”

“While we want to celebrate the past year, we also have many new plans for the future.”
