It was a tragedy many would remember - the death of two elderly ladies knocked down on a pedestrian crossing in Sidley.
The fatal accident on August 5 1989 horrified the community when Kathleen Pruden, 72, and Moira Honeysett, 64, were killed instantly as they tried to cross the road.
A memorial bench was put nearby to honour the two women but over the passing years it was damaged and then stolen.
Now local people are working together to replace the memorial bench in time to mark 25 years since this happened.
A Memorial Replacement Committee has been set up to fundraise and is seeking donations. If you would like to contribute, however much or little, please contact Mrs Nikkie Littlejohn on 07885510986, or Lucy Mepham on 07552393332, or pop it in an envelope and send it to - Memorial Replacement. 11, Crowhurst Lane Bexhill-on-Sea East Sussex TN39 5AS.
On June 7 there is a driveway sale at 3 Buxton Drive, from 10-2pm. If anyone would like a table in support of this project please contact Lucy on 07552393332.
Also Gerry Palmer of Battle Tackle Shop, in Sidley, is organising a sea fishing competition to help fundraise towards the purchase of a new bench. The fishing competition will take place on June 21 with many prizes on offer. Any of you fishermen and ladies who would like to take part in this competition is invited to call Gerry on 07831888268 for further details.
For residents, traders and visitors in Sidley there will be donation tins situated inside Carrolls, The Co-op, Battle Tackle, and The New Inn.
