THE OFT GRIDLOCKED A259 could soon benefit from a designated bus lane in a bid to relieve traffic on the busy stretch.
Work is already well underway on the controversial £100million plus link road, with the aim being to reduce congestion on the notoriously busy Bexhill Road (A259) while opening up other areas for investment.
And earlier this week, East Sussex County Council unveiled further plans to cut down on traffic james between Bexhill and neighbouring Hastings.
Five sections of designatied bus lane will be added to the road, if approved following a month-long public consultation, in the hope that by allowing buses to leave the main body of traffic it will not only speed up their journey times but also reduce the burden on the existing two lanes.
Parts of the road often grind to a virtual standstill during peak times - and subsequent lengthy bus journey times are believed to put locals off using public transport.
By shaving those journey times the county council hopes a better bus service can tempt more people away from their cars, which in turn would further alleviate traffic tensions.
The scheme would compliment the link road, which experts have said will cut A259 traffic by around 40 per cent even before the planned bus lane changes are taken into account.
If approved, the new lanes, between Glyne Gap roundabout and Filsham Road, will be accompanied by work to upgrade the bus stops along the route, including new shelters, raised kerbs and real time passenger information signs.
A four week public consultation begins today (Friday) and the council’s head of transport, Councillor Carl Maynard, is confident the scheme will be a success.
He said it represented a “unique opportunity”, adding: “The new bus lanes will result in a vastly improved experience for existing bus passengers and hopefully encourage more people to use public transport.”
