Bexhill College Careers Academy received the boost of ongoing support from Hastings Direct for its Business and Creative Media Career Academy.

Jay Wootten, Community Liaison at Hastings Direct said: “We are happy to continue our support of Bexhill College Careers Academy in 2014. We hope our sponsorship will help the students to experience the world of work, as it is really important to bridge the gap between education and employment.”

Karen Hucker, College Principal, together with students from the programme and Sue Rhodes, the Career Academy Coordinator, gratefully received the sponsorship from Hastings Direct to support the programme. Jay also delivered a ‘guru talk’ to the Career Academy students about the importance of effective CV writing and competent interview skills; this provided them with a valuable insight into what employers are seeking from potential job applicants.

Bexhill College is the only college in East Sussex affiliated to Career Academies UK and able offer this opportunity. There are currently 17 students on the programme, all of whom successfully secured their place after a rigorous selection process, including an interview with an employer.

Karen Hucker said: “Bexhill College offers students a wide range of enrichment opportunities alongside timetabled lessons to give them the best chance of succeeding in their futures. This extra-curricular opportunity enables students to develop employability skills and have greatly enhanced awareness of the world of work.”

As part of the Careers Academy students attend guru lectures from employers, visit local and city-based firms, participate at events in London run by Career Academies UK, benefit from regular one-to-one mentoring sessions with approved business mentors and undertake a six-week summer internship placement, either locally or further afield.

Sue Rhodes is keen to welcome new employers who are able to offer their support to the programme. Sue said: “It is both rewarding and satisfying to witness how much the students grow, especially in self-confidence, as a result of their Career Academy experience. The success of our programme is greatly due to the invaluable commitment we have received from employers and the businesses community who have generously provided their expertise, time and resources.”

For any employer or business that is interested and would like to get involved, please contact Sue Rhodes on 01424 214545 or email suerhodes@bexhillcollege.ac.uk.
