MIKE Conn officially leaves Bexhill High as executive principal today and is delighted that this year’s GCSE results were the best ever.
He admits it has been a turbulent year with the academy going into special measures and gives full credit to Year 11 students - and the staff involved - for achieving such excellent results.
Last week the Observer reported that the number of students with five GCSEs A to C including English and Maths had risen to 54 percent - six percent higher than the previous year.
Mike said: “After all the negative publicity that we have received, I have no doubt that a lot of people were expecting low results. But we have achieved the exact opposite - the young people performed exceptionally well and the proof was in the results last Thursday. If you compare our results to other schools locally, we didn’t do bad at all, in fact everyone connected with Bexhill High can take great encouragement from them.
“Of course, there is much to do - this is only the start - and I am sure that the new leadership team at Bexhill High will build on this foundation. The important aspect for me with the uncertainty going on, and dealing with the aftermath of Ofsted, we never lost focus on the progress our students needed to achieve.”
