Sidley firm makes splash in the Big Brother house

One Sidley resident is taking more of an interest than usual in the latest Big Brother series after his firm was tasked with fitting the pool for the housemates to cool off in.

Matt Shoesmith, of South East Pools Ltd, and his team worked for four days over a four week period and their job included fitting and lining the five metre circular pool and laying the pipes.

Mr Shoesmith said the business, based in Elva Way Business Park, is one of only a few in England that specialises in lining pools themselves, rather than contracting the work out to another company.

The pool is 1.2 metres deep and material for the lining and equipment came from Paul Jeffries at SCP.

Mr Shoesmith said: “When I first got the call I wasn’t told it was Big Brother just Elstree Studios so I didn’t know. It was only when I googled it that it came up with Big Brother and I thought brilliant.

“It’s quite exciting and we went up for a meeting and they chose us to do it and it all went from there.”

The job took them to Borehamwood in Hertfordshire where the house is based and viewers of the Channel 5 show - which started earlier this month – have been watching the latest events unfold. This series is the show’s 15th and chosen housemates include a journalist and a singer.

The Big Brother series sees housemates live in a specially constructed house and each contestant chooses, usually on a weekly basis, which housemate they wish to evict with the final vote usually falling to the public.

Those inside the house are isolated from the outside world and do not have the luxury of TV and other mod cons and are tasked with carrying out different challenges.

Mr Shoesmith, whose company recently opened a showroom at the business park, isn’t a regular fan of Big Brother but the 30-year-old said: “I’ve never watched it before but this year I have more interest.

He added, “One of the team Ben loves it and he jumped at it [ the chance to fit the pool].”

It’s not the first time the business has worked on a pool linked to a TV show.

The team has also carried out on site pool lining for Grand Designs at two locations - Devon and Hampshire.

The series features challenges faced by people designing and building their dream houses.
