The seeds have been distributed, the preparations made and the gardens are ready. All Bexhill in Bloom needs now is some kind weather and an army of keen green-fingered locals.

The celebrate 50s year of the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHC) In Bloom campaign the RHC has sent out packet of sunflower seeds to all the groups across the country with an encouragement to plant them between now and April 21.

And here in Bexhill the seed sewing has already got underway, with locals gathering at St Marks Church hall on Monday to dig them into the bank and against the fence of the garden.

Among the volunteers were Sandy Melvin, chairman of Bexhill in Bloom, Kim Richards from Sussex Wildlife Trust and a number of members from the Ark, including Malcolm Bates who brought his spade to help.

Afterwards, the volunteers all went into The Ark for a cup of coffee and a piece of celebratory Bexhill in Bloom.

Now it is a waiting – and watering – game until the display hits its peak later this summer
