Lucy Porter and Katy Brand bringing comedy talents to Hastings

You have to feel for women comedians. Not only are they invariably lumped into the 'must do jokes about periods and men being rubbish' generalisation, but more often than not – and certainly more often than men – they are judged on their looks. Or rather, how fit they are.

Some, like Jo Brand, revel in not being so. Others struggle to overcome either their lack of looks, or the weight of boasting a pretty face. If fat men are expected to be funny, the pressure is double on a less than aesthetically pleasing female of the species.

For such a liberal left-field industry, comedy is often found lacking in the equality stakes.

Maybe it is just men who are so quick to judge a woman's looks. It probably is. I know the reaction in Observer HQ to the news that Lucy Porter and Katy Brand were coming to town was shamefully predictable.

One colleague immediately declared how much he fancies the former, and I couldn't contain my delight that Katy Brand was coming to town. I can't explain why I like her, but I do. There, I have said it. Not once did their jokes get a mention though.

Which is a shame, because in Porter and Brand the White Rock Theatre is welcoming two of the most talented female comics on the circuit.

Porter brings her latest solo show, Fool's Gold, to Hastings on June 4. It is a witty romp through the history of gold, with musing about what makes the precious metal so special and why are we obsessed with the yellow shiny stuff.

The show even features live alchemy and long overdue tribute to Mr T. Comedy gold you might say.

Then, later that month, Katy Brand – sorry, British Comedy Award WINNER Katy Brand – is performing an evening of anarchic comedy, celebrity satire and music spoofs.

Her TV show parodies of stars such as Lily Allen, Kate Moss, Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis shot her to fame, and she hit the real mainstream with a jaw-dropping interpretation of Beyonce's Single Ladies on Let's Dance for Sports Relief on the BBC.

Returning to her live roots with this silly, sassy and smart evening of comedy, Brand is one not to miss.

Tickets for Lucy Porter (14) and Katy Brand (18.50) are available now from 01424 462288 or online at www.whiterocktheatre.org.uk.
