Observer Comment: Market idea is a step in the right direction

DEVONSHIRE Square never really looks as if it is used to the best of its potential.

With yards and yards of flat tarmac with enormous concrete balls denoting the boundary between the road and the pedestrian area, it begs to be livened up.

Now Bexhill Environmental Group is looking to start up a weekly farmers’ market in Devonshire Square on a Friday morning.

Organisers are putting the emphasis on ‘local’ - hoping to attract interest from farmers and producers within a 30-mile radius.

But what would that mean for town centre traders? Naturally there is a fear that a weekly event, rather than a one-off such as the successful yearly Anglo-Continental Fair, could undercut current business.

Market organisers hope to start the ball rolling on addressing this, plus any other wrinkles, at a public meeting at Manor Barn next week (Tuesday January 24, 5.30pm).

However, if the enterprise becomes as successful as Rye’s market, the result should hopefully be an upswing in business as the market would attract a great deal of passing trade.

Helping local producers, a potential increase in trade for Bexhill town centre, and the social side of a market in Devonshire Square - this idea could, if properly thought through, work out really well.

Best of luck to everyone involved - this idea is definitely a step in the right direction.
