Shame the snow didn't fall during Christmas time

WELL, we've had a very cold start to 2010 - with the heaviest snowfalls in the area for around 30 years.

Usually we're caught on the hop in this country whenever we get such a cold snap.

While that might be true in worse-affected parts of the UK, Bexhill at least seems to be coping nicely.

All the shops are open, the main roads are relatively clear, and the district council has stockpiled enough grit to keep the areas around public buildings and car parks salted for a good while.

There are the inevitable school closures, but this has been the case now for a number of decades and is generally accepted as standard practice.

And it's an unexpected holiday for the children, who can amuse themselves with snowball fights while their parents worry about travelling to work or the supermarket.

Despite the inconvenience for some, the town looks beautiful in its blanket of snow.

What a shame this weather didn't coincide with Christmas because that would have been truly magical.

Good news on way for cyclists?

IF you're a cyclist, then you'd be interested to hear Rother is reviewing its by-law banning bikes along the seafront on Monday.

This could well spell the end of the Bexhill Wheelers's campaign to allow cycling along the promenade instead of dodging heavy traffic in the road.

If the by-law is repealed, this offers up a whole world of opportunities for providing cyclists with better facilities.

It could be that a cycle lane gets incorporated into the seafront in the future, or that pedal-pushers will be able to travel from South Cliff to St Mary-on-the-Castle in Hastings in 2012.

So cyclists, watch this space.
