Stories show town spirit is still unbowed
FOR the second week in a row, the Bexhill Observer's front page lead has detailed the last-minute saving of a much-loved organisation.
Last week, we carried the news that plans to knock down St Barnabas Church and replace it with a modern building have been thrown out by the Church Commissioners.
This week, the good news is that staff at Wards, which has been established in the town since the 1930s, have staged a management buyout of the Bexhill branch.
And on page two this week, we carry a report that Bexhill's National Trust members' branch has escaped the threat of folding.
In the light of the challenging times forced upon us all by the recession, the news on Wards is particularly heartening, although the future of other branches of the businesses in other towns is still in the balance.
But it's not just about commerce – the decisions on all three organisations reflect both the richness of the fabric of Bexhill's community and the determination of individuals to keep going against the odds.
Club with the drive to succeed
ANOTHER group which has enjoyed a stunning success this week is the Bexhill 100 Motoring Club.
The organisation's fifth classic and custom car show at the Polegrove drew record crowds on Bank Holiday Monday.
The show featured a range of special cars from all over the country and organisers hope the fundraising generated will exceed that of previous years.
Let's hope so – this would be quite a feather in the group's collective cap in what is its 10th anniversary year.
