Today's rubbish can become the treasure of tomorrow

IT'S amazing how sometimes today's trash can become tomorrrow's goldmine.

Bexhill resident Dave Valentine found that out this week when he unearthed his childhood collection of 1980s crisp packets - which most people at the time would have just thrown in the bin.

While some readers could be forgiven for scratching their head and thinking "rubbish" the quirky charm of Dave's collection remains.

It's about nostalgia - the 1980s are now in that arena, making those who remember having those designs in their school lunchbox feel rather old.

It also mirrors collections of milk bottles with colourful advertising on them - also from the same era, with the same sort of hoarder's logic behind it.

Yet Dave's crisp packet collection does open up a rather whimsical debate.

What worthless items could we hold onto today which might be hailed as a piece of social history and perhaps worth something 20-30 years down the line?

If you have any bright ideas feel free to write to the Bexhill Observer, unless you want to keep them top secret!

Bexhill Achievers: nominations are still wanted

IT'S not too late to name your favourite inspirational person or group for a Bexhill Achievers Award.

With a presentation ceremony, dinner and disco planned at the De La Warr Pavilion on September 17, it promises to be a great way of rewarding the efforts of some smashing folk.

A big thank you to all who have sent in nominations so far - and of course to the event sponsors.

The deadline for nominations is August 23. To find a form and more information turn to page 16.
