Town centre: something does need to be done
IT'S a big issue in Bexhill that something needs to be done to regenerate the town centre.
A bugbear to residents, traders and perhaps even visitors has been the 'dead space' in Devonshire Square, which doesn't really do much for the town.
Now Rother has unveiled an ambitious plan to regenerate Bexhill's town centre, which still has to go before the council's Cabinet committee.
In spite of concerns over the recession and cutbacks, this is great news, provided of course it is done correctly and sympathetically.
As far as Devonshire Square goes, the idea to involve the railway station, the post office and the library is an exciting one.
The Bexhill Observer will of course be covering all sides of the debate this will generate.
No doubt the scheme will come under the microscope at Tuesday evening's meeting of the Town Forum, from which we propose to bring Internet users a live blog.
Government: have your say
THE Bexhill Observer has picked up the challenge thrown down by the new coalition government and invites its readers to name legislation they would like to see abolished.
In the week's Queen's Speech, the new administration in Westminster confirmed it intended to roll back the power of the State and repeal unnecessary laws - and it made clear it wants the people to set the agenda.
The Freedom (Great Repeal) Bill sets out ambitious plans to restore freedoms and civil liberties lost and to ditch unpopular and unnecessary laws implemented by New Labour.
The Bexhill Observer and its sister newspapers across north and west Sussex have launched a campaign to ask readers what laws they want to see repealed and why.
Once you have submitted your suggestions we will ask all readers to prioritise them through a newspaper vote - and we will then present the results to our MPs, hopefully at Downing Street.
Our campaign will bring together readers' views from across East and West Sussex and we'll take your demands to Downing Street and urge the political elite to deliver on their promises. It will be a real test of their sincerity - especially if the public takes a strong lead on controversial issues.
