Who should we call? Grotbusters...

IT’S good to see that an initiative to tidy up the town is having a positive effect, benefiting not only local businesses and residents but visitors alike.

No one likes to see empty, vacant premises with piles of mail and rubbish strewn all over the floor visible through the windows. However, there is only so much Bexhill’s Town Team and estate agents can do to improve tatty, run down premises.

Whilst this initiative is an excellent start to improve the appearance of the town, the bottom line is that grotty, poorly maintained buildings are ultimately the responsibility of the landlords and they should be held to task.

Maybe Rother District Council should consider taking the lead from Hastings Borough Council and their dedicated team of ‘Grotbusters’.

The Grotbuster teams are dedicated to banishing eyesore buildings and carry out annual reviews of the shabbiest properties in the town, targeting those that need improvement.

Property owners who let their buildings fall into disrepair face enforcement action.

Making Bexhill more attractive to visitors and new businesses is vital, and now more so than during the current economic crisis.

Town centre shops up and down the country are struggling to survive in the wake of a double dip recession and Bexhill is no exception.

The high costs of running a business are often outweighed by poor profit margins but anyone considering starting up a new business will want to be in an area which offers hope for the future - but if it looks shabby and tired they won’t give it a second glance.

First impressions are everything, so hats off to those endeavoring to improve the area and for laying the groundwork for better times ahead.
