Huw Merriman responded to constituents contacting him over the retailer’s closure and the parliamentary report into it.

“The government is determined to tackle corporate irresponsibility, something the Prime Minister has directly referenced when discussing reform of the economy,” he said.

“The joint report was very concerning, and the Insolvency Service is now carrying out an accelerated investigation.

“Jobcentres were put on standby to provide support and advice to those who were affected by the closure of BHS.

“In the long run, we need to do more to prevent this kind of irresponsible and reckless behaviour.”

The 88-year-old department store’s collapse affected 11,000 jobs, 22,000 pensions, sparked a parliamentary inquiry and left its high-profile former owners potentially facing a criminal investigation.

Over calls for Sir Philip Green to have his knighthood taken away, Mr Merriman said the Honours Forfeiture Committee is responsible for that despite backbench motions in its favour.
