Bexhill Rotary Club welcomed a new member of the 2013/14 Rotary year when Ian Edwards was inducted at their first meeting this month on March 4.

Ian was born in London within the sound of Bow Bells, making him a Cockney.

He attended South East Essex County Technical High School where he ran, swam and played football for not only the school but for Barking as well, he finished up at the school as Head Boy gaining 12 ‘O’ levels and 3 ‘A’ levels.

Since starting his working life as an accountant, in his time he has been a man of a good many parts.

He has worked in IT for Unisys and Canada’s Northern Telecom before setting up his first company in computer maintenance. Seven years later he along with a friend set up Toy Box, a charity to help disadvantaged children in South America, after which he was involved with founding a number of small businesses, went to live in Spain for a while and then returned to the UK to start a recruitment company.

He met wife, Jenny, on a boating holiday and they were married in 1970 and, as Ian has put it, are still married after 44 years! Ian has two grown up daughters and three grandchildren.

He’s been a lifelong fan of West Ham United and in his earlier years when a member of Harpenden Round Table was involved with charity events including half-marathons and even cycled on one occasion to Belgium! Nowadays he enjoys shooting, sailing, golf and reading (not necessarily in that order or, for that matter, all at once!) but he says that he doesn’t enjoy watching west Ham wrestling with relegation year after year.

After being formerly welcomed by President John Cooper who presented Ian with his shiny new Rotary lapel badge, in a short speech he said he is looking forward being actively involved with Bexhill Rotary Club and all its many projects.
