Sacre bleu! It is Pierre the guitar wielding gag monster
Preview: Pierre Hollins, Venuu, George Street, Tuesday (April 13), 7.40pm.
Fear not, people of 1066 Country. Old Town institution Stand Up Hastings has not come over all Gallic on you.
It may have booked a headline act with a decidedly French sounding name but it isn't hoisting the tricolour just yet.
Just as well probably, as there still appears to be people in and around this corner of Sussex who still view our European cousins with an air of suspicion.
Where else in 2010 Britain would you find a gaggle of locals gather together to take part in an event called Kicking the Frenchman's head in? Where else indeed.
However, if anyone can win over the anti-French brigade it is Pierre Hollins. Whether he is actually French is neither here nor there.
A critically acclaimed comic, Hollins' only other jobs have been washing dishes at the House of Commons labouring on a gas pipe line in Qatar, in the Middle East, and teaching drama to the mentally ill.
A fairly varied CV I think you would agree.
In his early days at the mic he worked as a support act to Lenny Henry and Rory Bremner; appeared in the West End with Rita Rudner; and toured with The Flying Pickets, and Willie Rushton and Barry Cryer.
Since those halcyon days he has completely re-invented his act several times – from his humble beginnings as an acrobatic spectacle to a more recent incarnation where he was found wielding an electric squash racket.
His relaxed amiability is defined by a compelling conversational style and absurd guitar posturing. Oh, did I not mention he has a guitar. Well he does.
His songs are jokes that rhyme, set to a guitar backbeat, never travelling down the easy route travelled by some exponents of song parodies.
He covers topics from love and hate, to sex and politics with a totally original voice, delivering his material with charm and irreverance.
Support comes from Joe Wells and Damien Kingsley and this week's open slot is filled by Observer reporter Richard Morris (oo-er missus). Take your mind out of the gutter.
