Straight out of Edinburgh

The first two have taken place.

Russell Kane hit the gag ball out of the park at Venuu for the opening Edinburgh slot and – by the time you read this – Tiffany Stevenson will have charmed her way through her hour long festival set.

Next up, this Tuesday (June 15), is Sweden's most successful comedian. Not that I can think of any others. Magnus Betner boasts an iconoclastic, taboo busting style which is not a million miles away from the legendary Bill Hicks, and certainly belies his roots as a pastor's son.

The unflinching, unblinking clarity of thought behind much of his material makes it hard for audiences not to listen to what he has to say. Like a modern day viking, he has already conquered Scandinavia and now has the English speaking world in his sights.

And, like many marauding European armies, he plans on starting here in 1066 Country.

Once Magnus the Funny has been and gone, the organisers have a stella line-up with which to tickle your fancies.

Keith Farnan brings his new show, Sex Traffic, to Hastings on June 22. His previous festival offering (No Blacks. No Jews. No Dogs. No Irish. All Welcome) tackled racism and fascism and proved to be one of the most thought provoking sets of recent seasons.

His new show looks at the value of women and the increase in everyday sexism. It might sound heavy going, but it manages to use a string of superb set pieces to hammer home his more subtle messages.

On June 29, the energetic, hairy whirlwind of a man Mackenzie Taylor comes to town, followed a week later by Stand Up Hastings favourite Phil Nichol on July 6.

Josh Howie tells the hilarious tale of being forced to grow up after being kicked out by his mum on July 13, and doctor, quizzer, bachelor and comedian extraordinaire Paul Sinha is booked for July 20.

Rounding the season off – no doubt in horrendously offensive style – is the all-powerful Jim Jeffries. The foul-mouth Aussie appears on July 27 with his Alcoholocaust show, with tickets available now from Hastings Tourist Information Centre priced 10 seated and 8 standing.

All the other shows are just 5 on the door, with Venuu opening at 7.30pm each Tuesday.
