Sussex Police praised as a gay-friendly employer

Its been announced that Sussex Police is once again in the top 100 list of gay friendly employers in the UK.

The force has improved its position and score in the 2014 Stonewall Workplace Equality Index - coming 91 out of 369 organisations entered. This means that Sussex Police has been in the top 100 five years out of six, with a score that’s increased from 138 to 150 out of 200.

The Index assesses organisational equality practices, how organisations engage with their LGB staff and customers and looks for good practice.

Deputy Chief Constable Giles York, the Sussex Police lead for Equality & Diversity, represented the Force at the launch event in London last week (January 15). DCC York said: “This is good news: it is vital that Sussex Police has a positive, inclusive working environment. I hope this result encourages even more Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual people to consider working with us, so we can continue to better reflect the communities we serve.”

Superintendent Laurence Taylor, Sussex Police’s Equality Champion for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual communities said he was delighted with the news, adding: “I will make sure we continue to keep listening and learning from local communities to increase trust and confidence, encourage more reporting of the crimes that affect them and to improve the services we provide.”

Jane Carter, Chair of the Gay Police Association - Sussex, said she was pleased with the placement of Sussex Police in the top 100. “This indicates that the continuing work of the organisation in addressing and responding to the needs of its LBGT employees is appropriate and effective. The GPA-S is committed to further improving this working environment and will assist where possible with advice, support and promotion of the organisation’s future projects in this arena.”
