£2.6 million has been spent on security for the Bexhill-Hastings link road since work began a year ago.
Protestors took to the trees last December in Sidley and Crowhurst to stop chainsaws in their attempt to halt the £100 million plus project.
A number were arrested and some are currently awaiting trial.
After that difficult start, work is “progressing well,” according to East Sussex County Council and on schedule to complete in Spring 2015.
So far work has cost around £29.7 million from the first site clearances and setting up haul routes for construction traffic.
The main focus has been on the Bexhill connection, which runs along the disused railway line, as the aim is to have this section open this Spring, to allow it to be used as a diversion while contractors demolish and reconstruct the bridge on Ninfield Road.
This has meant demolition of properties on London Road and work has started on the Chapel Path underpass which will run under the new road, and the demolition and reconstruction of the bridge at Woodsgate Park.
Other works in this area include the installation of new drainage both for the road and the diversion of the Egerton stream. In the rural areas the main focus of works has been ground improvement to provide a base for the road to be built on.
Over winter ESCC will monitor the settlement of these areas before earthworks recommence in the Spring.
Work will continue however on some of the bridges in the rural areas including the bridge to cross the Hastings to London railway line as well as the realignment of Crowhurst Road.
ESCC claims it has managed impact on the environment by working within seasonal constraints and under close supervision of ecologists. It adds the route was chosen to avoid Sites of Special Scientific Interest; however this meant running over soft ground in the valley, which required four large areas of ground improvement using specialist equipment to install drains and piles.
