The Twenty Ten Club

What a treat we had at our June meeting when local historian, Geoff Hutchinson, gave us a talk entitled “History through comic verse.” Geoff, who is well known to several of us, is a self confessed frustrated thespian and he acted his way through history from 1066 right up until the computer age with regional accents thrown in for good measure and certainly stopped any of us from having a quick doze! Unfortunately the afternoon started on a sad note when Ros gave out the news that one of our founder members, Priscilla, had passed away. She was a feisty lady, but had been instrumental in making the club so successful, mainly by running the raffle which gave us some much needed cash and she will be missed by all of us who knew her from the start. On June 4th we had a lovely day out to Windsor which was preceded by a one and a half hour boat trip from Maidenhead, although we did wonder whether we might literally miss the boat when the coach was held by an accident, but the company was very helpful and agreed to wait a little while for us and those already on board readily accepted our apologies for the delay, but there was still time to look around the town. About 40 members recently had lunch at The Smugglers in Pevensey which everyone seemed to have enjoyed and another meal out is already planned. In July we are going to see the BBC quiz programme Pointless being recorded, which will be something different. We can also look forward to the usual delicious strawberry cream tea at our next meeting. There will not be a speaker on this occasion as it is more of a social afternoon.
