The return of randomness to Bexhill
Preview: Random Fridays, De La Warr Pavilion, tonight (Friday).
Randomness returns to the De La Warr Pavilion tonight with a debut act joining an established live artist.
Composer and vocalist Leo Chadburn is best known for his work under the moniker Simon Bookish. Tonight's Random Friday sees him and a string quartet perform work from his latest album Everything/Everything after hours in the Pavilion. Chadburn, who calls his work "transgressive, investigatory pop and electronic music", also wrote the libretto for Richard Grayson's film, The Golden Space City Of God, currently screening in Gallery Two.
Support comes from House Music, a new installation by Matt Watkins and Caleb Madden, of Brighton based electronica collective Spirit Of Gravity. Inspired by John Cage and David Tudor, this work uses magnetic pick-up coils and homemade tiny microphones to pick up unheard noises in the environment. The hums and squeals are then re-played through unlikely household objects including bed springs and strip lights.
As it's new, little information is available on this performance, but the men themselves say it seeks to explore and amplify the latent electronic sounds lurking in all our homes. To do this, they enlist the help of old games consoles, broken LCD screens pushed into slide projectors and embroidery. Intrigued? The party starts at 7pm.
Tickets are still on sale to hear Richard Grayson in conversation about his work, showing in the Pavilion until March 14. His talk on Saturday, February 27 with Andrew Brighton, former Senior Curator of Public Programmes at Tate Modern, costs 5 to attend.
