Tony Tubb’s brand of individuality served as a brilliant foil for the skilled journalist that he was.
On press day, after nailing deadline with exactly the right number of perfectly chosen words right on the dot, he would exchange a stringy tie of the regimental/old school variety for a jaunty cravat and tease us for five minutes or so as we clamoured for him to read the latest instalment of a story he was composing week by week and would eke out episode by eagerly awaited episode starring a young lady by the name of Laura.
As he read lines referring provocatively to her pencil-slim waist he would feign surprise at the whooping reaction from the feminists among us.
Similarly, he would wickedly try to slip past me such as phrases as, on meeting an interviewee: “She was sweeping with all the enthusiasm of a housewife…” So I gave him his own column. Called Tubb Thump, it allowed Tony sometimes to rant but more often to dissect with affection the town of Bexhill which he loved with a passion, and its people, about whom he was not always so equivocal. For Tony was one of the most principled people I have ever had the privilege to meet, did not recognise shades of grey and could be outraged when people he thought he could rely on occasionally let him down.
For he was unshakeably loyal to his many contacts, had a great respect for authority and order despite his air of impending chaos, and was an absolute delight to work with.
Tony, you were wilfully eccentric, a great journalist, and a warm and generous man who remembered all our families and adored his own. We will all miss you.
