Chosen name is a cruel reminder

Have your say

The decision by Wetherspoons to name its new pub in Western Road, on the site of the former Cinema, The Picture Playhouse (Bexhill Observer, October 9) is a cruel reminder for the Bexhill and district communities of a valued asset lost.

It is regretted, in my view, that Wetherspoons in planning their conversion of the former cinema, did not have the vision to retain within the building a small cinema auditorium, able to seat 100-150 customers.

There are many smaller cinemas operating around the country catering for smaller audiences, many that also welcome being able to purchase a light meal and a drink before or after watching a film.

Given the size of the existing building this could have been an opportunity which would have found favour with the community, local businesses and the district council planners.

I would be interested to hear from Wetherspoons whether they considered a mixed use for the site given the earlier attempt by a local group to buy the building and re-open a cinema.
