Is 40 too old for retail work?

Have your say

I am emailing as I saw your story about, a course run by charity for retail.

I would love to tell you that I have over 16 years’ worth of retail knowledge gained from working for Bentalls (Kingston Upon Thames) and have been looking for a job for sometime now in Bexhill, Hastings and surrounding areas having moved down here 18 months ago and have approached many companies, such as M&S, Pets at Home and had no luck, not even an interview.

I think it is not down to knowledge but age and what they have to pay you, although companies will tell you otherwise.

I find it very frustrating not even to get an interview, I am well versed in all aspects of retail from customer service to management, yet no joy!!

Although retailRIGHT is doing a good thing I don’t think it will make any difference, as to the effect, that experience is worth nothing and reading about Fiona looking for five years in someway proves that age can be an issue.

I have applied for jobs locally been turned down but then going to the store to see who they employed, finding out its someone younger and less experienced got the job.

Is 40 too old? Maybe in the job market it is.
