LETTER: About time town gets own council

Am I alone I wonder in finding the antics of Rother District Council a source of amusement?

In last week’s Observer we were told Rother is about to launch a Community Governance Review.

About time many may say as Maynard, the leader of the council, said there would be one after the last election.

We are told the review will cost between £10,000 and £20,000, which may seem a great deal of money until we remember this is a council which spent over £70,000 on each of what they call shelters on the Western Parade.

One would like to think a town council would not have approved this expenditure of our money.

There can be little doubt that Rother would like to maintain the status quo, keeping all the power and our money under their control.

Second to this, they would favour Area Committees over which they would have financial control.

But what the people may well want is something over which they have more control like a town council.

Let us remember that at present decisions about our town are made by the Cabinet of Rother many of whom live in rural areas and know little about our town.

How wonderful it would be to see a town council and democracy alive and kicking in our town.
