LETTER: Council decision is already made

I was appalled to read on the Conservative candidate's election leaflet for the forthcoming Collington ward by-election that '˜Conservatives will not waste thousands of pounds or ask you to pay more tax to deliver a town council'.

How can it be that even before the Community Governance Review (CGR) has commenced or the consultation with the residents of Bexhill has started that the Conservatives, the ruling party on Rother District Council, can publically broadcast that they reject one of the possible outcomes of the CRG process?

A CRG is meant to be an impartial appraisal of the options for how a town or area should be governed and in particular whether a town council would be appropriate.

However it would seem that the Conservatives, the ruling party on Rother District Council and therefore the party who will decide whether or not to implement the CGR recommendation, has already decided that if the recommendation is that Bexhill have a town council, they will reject it.

In view of this policy I would say to Collington ward electors that if they want a town council for Bexhill to be considered then they should vote for the Independent candidate Deirdre Earl-Williams, whose predecessor Tony Mansi was one of the councillors who fought hard to gain the necessary petition signatures to force Rother District Council to conduct the Community Governance Review.

Those pre-disposed to vote Conservative will be depriving the Conservatives of a seat. They will however demonstrate that they oppose the Conservative’s rejection of one of the review’s possible outcomes even before it has begun.
