LETTER: Labour leader does not matter

Will Paul Courtel forgive me for finding his letter rather amusing ('˜Why I'm voting for Owen Smith', August 26)?

Backing Remain in the EU referendum sent a clear message to trade unionists, impoverished citizens, supporters and the working class movement, that Labour has walked away from them.

They felt deserted, betrayed, so no wonder they turned out in their millions to vote Leave.

Paul gives the game away: ‘The Labour Party was overwhelmingly in favour of remaining in the EU...’

Had Labour taken the initiative and led the Leave campaign, their natural territory, they would now be riding high.

It’s the elephant in the room and they still won’t talk about it but continue to belittle Brexit voters.

A loose translation goes: How dumb to choose such an obviously disastrous course.

Absent a catastrophe in the Tory government, it does not matter who leads the Labour party. That fateful decision keeps them in the box.
